JESUS IS OUR HIGH PRIEST
AND THE ANCHOR FOR OUR SOUL

We continued our study of Hebrews and found that before Jesus came, the High Priest would make sacrifices to God.  Usually it was a lamb.  But Jesus became that lamb and sacrificed himself on the cross for us.  Because of that, he is our new High Priest.

After so much rain last week, Hebrews 6:7 was very appropriate.  "For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God."  We took home seed packets to remind us that as we grow in our faith, we also will produce great works for Jesus.

Hebrews 6:19 tells us that "We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, here Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."  We made anchors to remind us of this wonderful promise.

JESUS IS BETTER THAN MOSES

Hebrews 3 tells us that Moses was a faithful servant in God's house.  But Jesus was more worthy of glory than Moses, just like the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.  The author of Hebrews also reminds us that when Moses led the Jewish people out of slavery in Egypt, they ended up wandering in the wilderness for forty years because they would not trust God.  Why do you suppose he reminds us of that?  Verses 12-19 tell us why.  It is a warning that we should take care that we do not have evil unbelieving hearts that might cause us to "fall away from the living God."  It also contains a responsibility that we are to help and encourage one another so that we do not hardened our hearts and be "unable to enter his rest because of unbelief."

NEXT WEEK:  Hebrews compares Jesus to the High Priest.  Don't miss it!

JESUS MADE HIGHER THAN THE ANGELS

This week the author of Hebrews reminded us of Psalm 8.  His readers who were largely Jewish Christians, would have been very familiar with this passage.  It reminds them that when man was created he was made a little "lower than the heavenly beings and crowned with glory and honor."  He had dominion over the animals and birds and fish and "all the works of your hands."  But man was tempted and ultimately became sinful.  God sent us Jesus, his only Son, to live as a man, lower than the angels for awhile.  Then Jesus did something incredible for us.  He gave up his life as a sacrifice for us that we may one day join him in his kingdom and rise above the angels.  He was and is our salvation.

And someday we can truly be "crowned with glory and honor."

RALLY DAY - HERE COME THE HEBREWS!

We all like to choose what is better.  But sometimes we don't realize what would truly be the better choice.  That's when it is helpful for someone to come alongside and compare the two choices.  When we were offered two different pieces of cake in the MegaZone, we first chose the one that looked the best, with the most icing and sprinkles. But when we learned that piece had been dropped on the floor, we changed our minds!

The people who lived long ago at the same time as the Apostle Paul had a very important decision to make.  They had to decide whether to trust Jesus to make them right before God or trust their Jewish religion. It wasn't an easy choice. During this time Emperor Nero was murdering Christians.  He even murdered the great Apostles Peter and Paul.  So, at first glance, it looked like the better choice might be to turn away from Jesus and trust their Jewish religion.  But someone came alongside to help them compare the two choices and discover which was truly better.  That someone was the author of the book of Hebrews.  Join us as we learn from Hebrews - "Why Jesus is better."*
