PUTTING ON THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD
Paul tells the Ephesians to "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." The Roman Empire had spread throughout Judea and Paul's readers would have been familiar with the armor of the soldiers posted there. He uses each piece of their armor as a metaphor for the spiritual resources they can call on through Christ. The breastplate is Righteousness; the belt is Truth; the helmet is Salvation; the sword of the spirit is the Word of God; the shield is Faith; and the shoes the Gospel of Peace. Paul says if we arm ourselves with righteousness, truth, the world of God, faith, the Gospel and Christ's salvation, we can stand firm against anything that comes our way!
